Lt. Governor felicitates parents of Esow Alben


Port Blair, Aug 29: Hon’ble Lt. Governor Admiral D.K. Joshi, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, NM, VSM (Retd.) felicitated the parents of Shri Esow Alben, a promising young boy of Nicobar, on occasion of National Sports Day- 2018 with an amount of Rs. 1 Lakh in recognition of his recent achievement of winning the Silver Medal in UCI Junior Track Cycling World Championship-2018. The Chief Secretary, Secretary (Sports) and Secretary to LG of A & N Administration were present on the occasion.

Dhanikhari Dam is in good and well maintained condition

Port Blair, Aug 29: As part of exposure tour the media persons has visited Dhanikhari Dam on Aug 28, 2018, where the Assistant Engineers, Shri Kabilan and Junior Engineer, Shri Anbu of PHED, APWD received the media persons.
They also felicitated the scribes and explained about the functioning of the dam. On being asked about the condition of the dam, they informed that the dam is in good condition and even in the giant earthquake and tsunami of 2014, did not suffer damage.
However, the dam was renovated and height of the dam was raised by 5 mtrs in 2013. Shri Kabilan said that the wall is in good and well maintained condition. He Further, informing about the present features of Dhanikhari Dam, the AE Shri Kabilan said, the height of the dam is 37.25 mtrs, length of dam top is 146 mtrs., gross water storage is 8554 ML (RL 66.00), having 3 nos. Gates, the length of spillway is 17 M and design flood is 225 Cumecs. The Dam is presently supplies 28.40 MLD (Millions of Litres per Day) water to various pockets on each supplying day (10.52 MLD for Panchayat areas and 17.88 MLD for Municipal areas through Water Treatment Plant, Lambaline). He further said, now we have sufficient water level and can capable to supply water every day in view of good rainfall in the islands, but in summer seasons its requires to be cautious. However, the Assistant Engineer, APWD, Shri Kabilan has expressed happiness to the Andaman & Nicobar Media Federation (ANMF) for visiting and know the ground reality of Dhanikhari Dam.

ANMF's media exposure tour gets good response from rural populace


Port Blair, 28 Aug: The Andaman & Nicobar Media Federation (ANMF) has organised its maiden media tour-cum-news coverage visit to various Panchayats of South Andaman today, which was organized with the sole aim to know about the status of various development projects under progress in the South Andaman as well as to know about the issues and problems faced by the rural populace.
Despite continuous rain since morning the ANMF determination and media persons' excitement made the programme a grand success. The visit has covered Dhanikhari Dam, Primary Health Centre Tushnabad, Govt. Primary and Middle School Ograbraj, Electricity Office Ograbraj, interaction with Mitakhari area farmers, Tsunami shelters, Govt. Secondary School Namunaghar, Hope Town Jetty, dilapidated Burma Jetty at Namunaghar, Pradhan Office Mitakhari and also witnessed the flooded fields along the roads in rural areas during the journey.
During the news coverage visit, media persons observed that some welfare projects benefitting the people, and people expressed their satisfaction over authorities, and many incomplete projects are still pending and left unattended by concern departments since many years.
The media persons also witnessed the dilapidated condition of schools, and challenges in health centre which still need to pay more attention by the concerned authorities to provide better services to the rural people. The people at most of the places narrated that despite registering of complaints or informing the concern departments nothing fruitful is coming out of the pleas as cutting of old trees on the sides of roads and rectifying old electric wires and upon other general issues.
However, the central government has been introducing and working on big projects as national high ways, bridges and laying of Optical Fibre Cable for the development of islands, but here the rural people cry for the basic infrastructure in the islands. Apart from that, the existing condition of roads are badly affecting the public service vehicles and parking place also becoming a matter of concern for survival, said some passenger vehicle operators at Tusnabad.
The AIR & DDK-the central government media houses also attended the tour and provided adequate coverage. Altogether, 22 media persons participated in the tour-cum-coverage visit to Panchayats and made it a great success in terms of crucial issues, which were examined and noted by media persons for media reports in coming days.
All the media persons have appreciated the efforts of ANMF for organising such Panchayat areas coverage programme in a well organised manner and conveyed hearty thanks to its President, Mr. K Ganeshan. The President, ANMF thanked the media persons for participating in the media exposure tour. He also assured that the issues will be taken up before the competent authorities in the Administration.

Youths contribute their mite to Kerala relief


PORT BLAIR, Aug 29:A group of youths has raised  Rs. 52,700/ in just three days for Kerala Flood relief.  They collected the money from local shopkeepers and the general public with the intention of donating all the collected money to the Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund.  They handed the money on August 27, 2018 to Dhiraj Jha, Chief Manager, SBI, Port Blair who lauded the noble work done by the youths headed by Ehtesham Ahmed Khan, Shubhankar Halder, Anshika Mandal, Pallavi Mandal, Salman Khan and Vicky Wao who also have their own Youtube channel i.e. VickyWao.

NCS extends helping hand to Kerala flood victims



Port Blair, Aug 29: The teachers and students of Navy Children School (NCS), Port Blair on Aug 24, 2018 along with civilian volunteers and defence personnel enthusiastically participated in loading 2.5 tons of relief material on board Indian Air Force AN-32 Aircraft for dispatch to flood hit Kerala. Part of this relief material was contributed by the students and staff of the school.
This effort was in support of the initiative taken by the Islanders for the Kerala flood victims, which took wings when Vice Admiral Bimal Varma, AVSM, ADC, Commander -in-Chief, Andaman & Nicobar Command (CINCAN) accepted to dispatch the relief material by Air Force aircraft when approached by the Hon'ble Member of Parliament, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Shri Bishnu Pada Ray.
The Member of Parliament took active interest in the initiative and the first batch of relief material was dispatched on 21st August 2018. The Aircraft flew to Thiruvananthapuram from where the material was further distributed by the Relief Commissioner to the flood affected areas. The second batch left onboard the AN-32.

Ashes of Late Atal Bihari Vajpayee Immersed at Indira Point


Port Blair, Aug 29: On August 27th, 2018 Asthi of former Prime Minister Bharat Ratna Swargiya Atal Bihari Vajpayee was immersed in Indira Point, Campbell Bay by Mr. Vishal Jolly, State President BJP, Mr. Sanjay Singh. State Vice President BJP, E. S. Rajesh, District President BJP, N. Kiran, Mondal President, PRI members and all BJP leaders were present on the occasion. During the Asthi Kalash Yatra from Campbell Bay Airport to Indira Point via Community Hall the large numbers of BJP workers and sympathizers were paid homage to former Prime Minister.

Islanders donate relief materials to Kerala flood victims



Port Blair, Aug 22: Setting an example, the people of A&N Islands, have taken an initiative to help people of Kerala, who are now suffering from natural calamity. Dozens and Dozens of faceless and responsible Islanders with the help of the MP, Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray, have raised the fund amounting to Rs. 93,910/- (in rupees) and collected the relief materials worth around 25,00,000 for the flood hit people of Kerala. Packing was done with the help of volunteer  students from DBRAIT and officers and men of Indian Coast Guard and Indian Navy. All the rescue kits are being airlifted by Andaman Nicobar Command to Kerala on Aug 21, 2018. Around 2.5MT relief materials were airlifted to Kerala through aircraft of ANC.

ANC Organized Innovation Competition; CINCAN praises spirit and efforts of participants


Port Blair, Aug 22: To encourage creative thinking and innovative spirit, Andaman & Nicobar Command organized an Idea & Innovation Competition for all Units of the Command at Military Station, Birchgunj on Aug 20, 2018.
The competition, held in various categories, was reviewed by Vice Admiral Bimal Verma, AVSM, ADC, Commander-in-Chief, Andaman & Nicobar Command. He lauded the spirit and efforts of the participants and encouraged them to keep the innovative spirit alive and promote creative thinking amongst all ranks.
The event saw active participation by teams from all components of the Command. A large number of operational & logistics Innovations were on display. It showcased such advanced technology like the Multifunction Display Simulator for Helicopters and Modular Solar Battery charger for soldiers. Various innovations that invoked curiosity of the on lookers included ideas like generation of dummy targets on Radar display for training and practice exercises. The innovations, built using in-house resources, also contribute significant savings to the exchequer.

CBI arrests two engineers of ALHW

Port Blair, 22 Aug: The Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested an Assistant Engineer and a Junior Engineer on Aug 21, 2018, both working in Andaman & Lakshadweep Harbour Work Ltd., Port Blair for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs. 22,000/- each from the complainant. The case was registered on a complaint wherein it was alleged that the accused had demanded a bribe from the complainant for allowing him to execute the Road repairing Work. CBI laid a trap and caught both the accused red-handed while demanding and accepting a bribe or Rs. 22,000/- each from the complainant. Both the arrested accused was produced before the Special Court, Port Blair.
