Transportation of PDS to remote islands is the only concern: CS&CA

Port Blair, Dec 26: A&N Administration has the policy of universalization of PDS wherein no exclusion criteria has been adopted, instead every resident family has been made eligible for subsidized ration, if so willed. Regular supply of PDS to the remotest of the inhabited area is the responsibility of CS&CA department of A&N Administration. This is a challenge, keeping in view the difficult terrain and limited  availability of logistics like ships on time, which is met by the corresponding commitment of the administration and 2463MT of rice, wheat and fortified atta is distributed amongst the 1,08000 families comprising of approximately 450000 persons every month. These   include 15000 NFSA beneficiary families and 93000 APL families.
The awareness and active participation of beneficiaries in PDS matter is an asset for the department which keeps it updated to ensure maintenance of regular supply. Supply of ration of December, 2018 to 22 FPS of Middle Andaman was made only on 14-15 of December and was delayed due to authorized functionary being busy with election duty. Taking up of this issue by local dailies reflects the vibrant relationship between department and the public. But the story a few days earlier would have been more responsible than after the resolution of the issue. The Department acknowledges the responsible spirit of the media and look forward to a vibrant and positive relationship which enhance the efficacy of delivery of services.
Timely supply of LPG cylinders to more than 90000 active registered LPG consumers is another challenge before the department every day. The availability of LPG cylinders from IOCL generally is not an issue but the transportation of the same to remotest island through POL worthy vessel is. Proactive approach of the administration in the last 3-4 months has ensured timely transportation of LPG and other POL to remote places with active support of DSS, PMB and private ship owners. 5 yearly external audit of IOCL was completed on 14th December which caused 4 days disruption in delivery of LPG cylinders. The department acknowledges the cooperation of public in bearing with such genuine challenges, collaborative approach and honesty of purpose on the part of administration under the able leadership of present Chief Secretary, a press release says.
