Impressive Beating Retreat ceremony marks culmination of Republic Day celebration in Isles

Four day long festivities of Republic Day 2019 culminated with Beating the Retreat. The vivacity of the Islands was at display in full fervour in presence of Dr. Thaawarchand Gehlot, Hon'ble Minister (Social Justice & Empowerment), Admiral D K Joshi, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, NM, VSM (Retd.) Hon'ble Lt Governor, A&N Islands and Vice-Chairman, Islands Development Agency and other senior dignitaries.

Port Blair, Jan 30: Impressive performances by bands of Army, Navy, A & N Police, colourful cultural programme, illumination of boats and spectacular fire work display formed part of the Beating Retreat ceremony that marked the grand finale of the Republic Day celebration, at the historic Netaji Stadium on Jan 29th evening. The Lt. Governor, A&N Islands, Admiral D K Joshi, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, NM, VSM (Retd.) was the chief guest while, the Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Dr. Thaawarchand Gehlot also graced the occasion. The First Lady of A&N Islands, Smti. Chitra Joshi, the Member of Parliament Shri Bishnu Pada Ray, Smt. Rupa Ray, Principal Secretary, Shri Vikram Dev Dutt, Senior Officers of the Administration, Defence and general public in large numbers also attended the function.
The ceremony set out with the bands of Army, Navy and A & N Police including Ladies Police Pipe Band, marching in unison, playing popular marching tunes, followed by performance of various marching movements and beautiful formation. This was followed by lowering of the National Flag.
A combined display of colourful and mesmerizing cultural programme was presented by school students of GSSS Bhatubasti and SS Prothrapur (combined), SSS Nirmala and Govt. Model Sr. Sec. School, Aberdeen, which received huge applause from the gathering.
As part of the Beating Retreat, Naval ships at the anchorage fired vary's pistol, while fireworks from the Marina Park illuminated the air in front of the Stadium. This was followed by illumination of ships of Navy, Coast Guard and Shipping Services, anchored between Marina Park Complex and Subhash Chandra Bose Island.
