Port Blair, June 21: The
5th International Day of Yoga was befittingly celebrated in the Islands today,
together with the rest of the country and the world. The A&N Administration
had set up a number of centers in South Andaman, North & Middle and Nicobar
Districts where hundreds of yoga enthusiasts from all corners of the Islands
participated in this year’s yoga demonstration this morning.
The state level function for the
celebration of 5th International Day of Yoga was held in the auditorium of
Govt. Girls Senior Secondary School here this morning. The Lt. Governor, Andaman
& Nicobar Islands, Admiral D K Joshi, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, NM, VSM (Retd.),
chief guest of the function, participated in the Yoga Demonstrations. The Chief
Secretary, A&N Administration, Shri Chetan B Sanghi, Principal Secretary
(Health), Shri Vikram Dev Dutt, Chairperson PBMC, Smt. Anusia Devi, other
senior officers of the Administration besides a large number of people from all
walks of life, including police and defense personnel, senior citizens of Port
Blair town and general public participated in the Yoga Demonstration in this
center. It was for the first time in the Isles, that differently abled children
and person on wheel chair also participated in the Yoga demonstration on the
occasion of the International Yoga Day celebrations here.
A number of yogasanas were demonstrated
under the guidance of Shri Ajit Kumar Das, Yoga Instructor (AYUSH) and two
students of JNRM, P Madhuri and Nandini. The yogasan demonstrated included
Tadasana, Vrikshasana Ardhachakrasana, Trikonasana, Dandasana, Bhadrasana, Ustrasana,
Vakrasana etc. which were simultaneously followed by the participants. The
participants also pledged to keep themselves healthy by practicing yoga.
The programme was jointly
organized by the Directorate of Health Services and A&N Islands AYUSH Society,
A&N Administration, a press release said.
