Blair, Jan 7: Many parts of the city and its suburbs are started facing acute
shortage of drinking water early summer this year, despite awareness campaigns
about the various water conservation measures during July and August 2019 as
part of "Jal Shakthi Abhiyans" in the entire A&N Islands.
However,
water starved residents of these areas are having a tough time without bath for
days together. The bigger families are facing even tougher situation. Many
households are compelled to purchase bottled water for cooking and even taking
bath.
The
Port Blair Municipal Council Secretary, Mr. Suneel Anchipaka told agencies that
he was seized of the situation and all possible steps are being taken to
minimize people's difficulties. He named a number of areas where the people are
facing severe water scarcity. These include Dairy Farm, Buniyadabad,
Junglighat, Goalghar etc.
The
PBMC Secretary further said that as one of the measures to tide over the water
shortage, multiple water connections will not be given to the applicants during
lean season. Anchipaka also urged the public to conserve water. He said that as
an immediate step, drinking water will be supplied through tankers.
"We
have five water tankers and three more will be hired from private parties for
supplying drinking water in different areas during the dry season. At the same
time, only raw water will be supplied for other activities such as construction
and gardening. People should realize the importance of precious water and try
not to waste it," advised the civic body Secretary.
