Car Nicobar, Oct 16: For the first time in Car Nicobar, shredded plastic has been used for the construction of road work. Administration has been insisting on using 8-10% shredded plastic in bituminous road work as recommended by CRRI. APWD, Construction Division, Car Nicobar on Oct 12, 2019 in the presence of the Deputy Commissioner, Nicobar District, Dr. Monica Priyadarshini had started using shredded plastic 8-10% in the ongoing road work 'Improvement of internal road from Kinyuka School to Nicobari Round Hut at Chukchucha for a length of 2.3 kms. This has been an initiative taken by APWD, Car Nicobar for the judicious use of existing plastic waste in public welfare, which in turn minimize the burden of plastic waste from the environment of this territory.

TMI Bureau Port Blair, Oct 02: As part of National Campaign against the single-use plastic and on the occasion of 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Over 25000 cloth bags (made by Skill Development Centre, DBRAIT) were distributed to general public for free by DBRAIT in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Oct 02, 2019. At different distribution points, people at large numbers collected the cloth bags in exchange of a polythene bag. Background: Less than 50 years ago plastic bags were a rarity in the world. In Andaman it's just a decade ago Polyethylene were came into use, but badly affected a lot. Before plastic bags, there was paper or cloth. Paper bags worked but they were not easy to carry and they weren't nearly as strong as plastic. The most important part is paper was more expensive to produce than plastic. As per reliable sources, a group of ten students of Marine Biology from Pondicherry University, Brookshabad have gone for study based snorkeling at Marina Pank for research on the subject they are studying. It was not the first time, but they used to go on a marine study few times ago at different locations in South Andaman. But, when any natural disaster like earthquake hits the islands, people use to rush to wells or ponds for whatsoever water. Islanders can remember the 2004's earthquake, when water supply had been suspended for a couple of weeks due to pipelines damaged in tremor. People used to seek and rush to every available well in urban areas to manage the requirement of water at households. Anyhow, the PBMC and APWD supplied limited drinkable water through water tankers at different parts in urban areas during December 2004 earthquake in the A&N Islands, till the rectification of pipelines. Port Blair, Sept 11: The Delhi Development Authority (DDA), an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs, GoI has a proposal to develop an iconic park as "Bharat Vandana Park" at New Delhi. Besides other attractions, the main component of the park will be an exclusive area depicting replica of an important monument from each State/ UT of India. This "Mini India Park" segment apart from other facilities will have miniature version of identified iconic/ historical monuments from all parts of India. The DDA has requested the A&N Administration to identify one historical icon/ Monuments from the UT of A&N Islands to be a part of the Mini India, to showcase the rich heritage of our UT.
